Two working doors!
I do not want to get into this, just share a quick note that I’m delighted I can now use both the front door and back door to my apartment, since both can now be locked from the inside AND outside. The back door — which would make biking easier, since it goes to where I keep the bike — has been broken for literally years and I hadn’t reminded the landlord in a while (I’m bad at asking for help around the apartment, this will be explained later), but had to do so with slight panic (also there’s the panic of not having May rent and not knowing how long I can be in the place) when they announced the front door would be inaccessible for two days because of concrete work. They were pouring a new walkway, starting early Friday morning, and it would be drying all day Saturday too. So I couldn’t actually leave my apartment if I wanted it to lock. The irony of this long after “lockdown”/stay at home during the pandemic…two days shouldn’t be much, but when you have a lot of work and money and other things you’re trying to do, they are. Or even just getting out to keep up my daily posts in places with wifi.
Long story short, they looked at it for a while on Friday afternoon — I’d actually ventured out for a very close by errand leaving the door unlocked (it’s an upper level, and there’s a locked gate) — and that’s when they showed up, so I hurried home. They said they needed to get supplies and would be back Saturday, so Friday night I stayed in, and Saturday morning. They came by after 1 to start working on it and had to take two breaks to buy more supplies and tools, but it was finally done…Saturday around 8:30 pm. I only made it out to my closest liquor store, but being able to lock a door this time! I had a lot of things I wanted to do Saturday but without a housesitter, wouldn’t risk it. Especially since by late afternoon there was a hole in the door where the lock used to be, so it wouldn’t exactly looked locked from the outside. Not that they wanted to spend most of a Saturday fixing a door, either. I’m so glad it’s done, and we worked on a slow drain as well, and they know I have some outlets that just up and quit working. I fixed one by flipping the circuit or whatever, so my kitchen is less of a chaos of extension cords all over.
And Sunday morning, I got to use the front door to my building for the first time since Thursday evening!
